Persistent Secure Connections

Something in your browsing history or cache is likely preventing you from turning off secure browsing.

For Internet Explorer users:

Adapted from an Ehow article on the issue:

• Open Internet Explorer. If the menu bar is not visible, right-click on the title bar of the window and activate the Menu bar option. From the Tools menu, choose "Internet options". This opens up the Internet Options window.
• Select the tab labeled "General" and find the section that says "Browsing History." In this section, click the button that says "Delete." This will then pull up another pop-up menu. The title of the menu reads "Delete Browsing History." Click the button toward the bottom of the menu that says "Delete All." A confirmation pop up will appear, asking you once again if you want to delete the browsing history. When it does, click "Yes."
• In the Internet Options window again, click the tab that says "Content". Click the "Settings" button next to the section that says "Auto Complete." Click "OK" to delete the Auto Complete history. This is important because any web site addresses visited will automatically pop up when someone starts typing into the address bar, due to the Auto Complete feature. For example, if you visited a website named "XYZdating.com" that you found through a search engine, the address would not show up in the address bar, but if someone starts to type the letter "X" in the address bar, then the Auto Complete function will pull up the address "XYZdating.com" and offer to complete the entry. If you do not want someone to see this, then you will need to delete this section as well.
• Return to the "Internet Options" window again. Select the "General" tab. Click the "Settings" button on the Browsing History section. When the "Temporary Internet Files" menu pops up, click the button labeled "View Objects." This should be cleared (i.e. drag all items in the folder to the trash).
• Close all Internet browsing windows and open new ones. Check the address bar to make sure the addresses have been cleared. If not, try re-starting your computer and repeating this procedure.

For Firefox users:

• Open a Firefox window and click on the area at the top labeled "Firefox." This opens a drop-down menu. When the menu opens, click "Options" at the right.
• Click the icon at the top labeled "Privacy."
• Look in the middle "History" section. If you have Remember history selected, click the link to "clear your recent history."
• Next, click the Advanced icon at the top of the Options window. Choose the Network tab. In the Cached Web Content section, click the Clear Now button.
• Close all Internet browsing windows and open new ones. Check the address bar to make sure the addresses have been cleared. If not, try re-starting your computer and repeating this procedure.

For Chrome users:

• Open a Chrome window and click on the 3-bar stack button at the top right. This opens a drop-down menu. When the menu opens, click "Settings". You can also get to this by typing "chrome://settings" in the address field.
• In the Privacy section, click the "Clear browsing data..." button.
• In the "Clear browsing data" window, select all of the checkboxes. Change the "Obliterate the following items from:" pull down to select "the beginning of time". Press the "Clear browsing data" button to proceed.
• While still in Settings, go to the Privacy section again and click the "Content settings..." button.
• In the "Content settings" window, go to the Cookies section and click the "All cookies and site data..." button.
• In the "Cookies and site data" window, click the "Remove all" button. Click "Done" to complete changes. Click "Done" in the "Content settings" window.
• Close all Internet browsing windows and open new ones. Check the address bar to make sure the addresses have been cleared. If not, try re-starting your computer and repeating this procedure.
